The Past's Narration

Moving pictures divorced from sound,
while a fotoplayer played
at being a mechanical marriage
counsellor, only for crackling voices
to prove machines
don’t always replace people.

Moving pictures making love
to spoken words and soundtracks,
eventually outgrowing black and white,
leaving silent films
part of the past’s narration
about the sort of progress that can’t help
but give birth to nostalgia.
