The Lighthouse: It Should Have been Gayer

I went with a friend to go and see the Lighthouse because everyone who knows anything about movies told me to and that’s just how I live my life. The truth about this experience was that it was unnerving, uncomfortable, and a little unsatisfying if I’m going to be honest. And this is coming from a girl who watched Requiem for a Dream twice. In a row...

Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All By Laura Ruby || a Review

So, the reason that I ended up reading this book was because I spotted it on my friend’s bookshelf, read the first couple of pages, and tucked it into my backpack as I smiled at my friend. Anyway, the basic premise is that we follow a girl, Frankie, who lives in Chicago during world war two. The story mainly follows her and her life, while Frankie is also followed by Pearl, a ghost who is living her best death. Or trying to anyway...

Star Wars 7, 8, & 9: Nostalgia and Lightsaber Fights

Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of Star Wars. I emerged from the womb knowing and loving the movies. This was, of course, because my parents love the films and were alive when they first came to theaters, stunning audiences with their brilliance. Through childhood osmosis, transferred that love to me and my brother. You, dear reader, might be wondering why I am prefacing a movie series retrospective with my childhood. Because it’s where my adoration for this property, as with many, lies. I have wondered if my love of the new Star Wars movies was solely based on my childhood love of the property....

Burnout

The most frustrating place to exist mentally is on the gray side of winter. Where your mental background is half-melted snow piles and dead grass. The bitter cold wind that whispers bitter lies, and that all your ideas are best left in the permafrost...

Disney During COVID-19

Last week I was on vacation at the most magical place on Earth: Disney World. I went with my brother and mother as a kind of “let’s recapture that childhood” vacation, and we were more than excited when we booked back in October. Then, months later when Covid-19 infection rates were first being reported on, we decided to still go, because, well, we were all really looking forward to this trip. My brother wanted an escape from the LA actor grind. My mom wanted a break from work, and I desperately needed the sun after living through this year’s bleak Minnesotan winter...

Little Things I'm Doing to Survive this Pandemic

We’re in some weird times right now. Scary even. Covid-19 has reached us in the states, and has shut down just about everything. I’m thankful that we’ve managed to close down all non-essential services, for the most part, but as a health care worker, it’s been a little wild having my commute to the hospital halved. The streets are empty, save for a few walkers. Even though spring has just started to bloom, it feels like we’ve returned to winter....

A Reading

The Moon: “It’s the primal thing we share with the dog and the wolf: something is coming and it isn’t good”. This feeling won’t leave me. Fear, in this way, has finally found me. The stolen brushes of skin. Wandering finger tips exploring topical maps of loved ones, of strangers. Of strangers I wish to love. How was that possible months ago? Lust has turned to revulsion, to fear. I never thought the idea of touch would become scarier than my fear of being locked in place....

What's Up With Dragons

In these troubling times of equal parts anxiety and boredom, I find it helpful to ask questions and seek answers from Wikipedia. It’s a nice way to practice curiosity and get insight into our world. For me, I chose dragons as my topic of discovery, because they have always been fascinating to me and I’ve had a few questions about them....

A Story of Dragons

Over the centuries, the Council of Dragons has been many things. Conquest for knights who’d been sent home scorched or burned to the bone. A wise deity of knowledge seekers, and even companions to men deemed to hold dragon’s breath. Now, atop a fog dense mountain, the remaining active members joined once again for a purpose of similar magnitude...

Breathe Easy

The concept for this series came to me while I was walking around. I found so many blooming trees and felt a little like nature was kinda giving us a well deserved middle finger. That she was breathing in the air so easily, able to bloom as if it were nothing, while our lungs sat suffering in our chests. I just imagine mother nature cooing at me, “Breath easy” while we reply back “I can’t, mother I can’t.”

Support Local Artists

Part of Brown Bag Online’s mission is to create a space where all art can be in conversation with each other. Right now, it’s the Black Community. This page will be dedicated to highlighting those voice. We will be updating this page with Black artists to follow/support from poets to film makers.

Issue #2 Conversation Starter: Kintsugi

Here at brown bag, we spent a few days mulling over what we wanted the theme of the second issue to be. Something that spoke to the lived experiences of others, of ourselves, and that lived in art. For a few days Taylor and I sent words and phrases back and forth, in a kind of stream of consciousness, until finally an image came to mind. Something that I remembered seeing on Tumblr sometime in 2013 or 2014. The image, a repaired china bowl that was not glued together as to be immaculate, where the scars of a shattered past were hidden away, but pieced together with gold....

Front Row to the Storm

All day long, the sky had taken on a dramatic quality. Dark clouds tinted the clear parts of the sky a sickly green color. The air outside played into the theatrical scene with enough moisture to drench a person if they dare set foot outside. This weather was the exact kind that Ella adored. ...

Hands coated in spackle, breathing deeply, the summer heat unrelenting. She knows nothing of me, nature, refusing to blow a breeze through my window. This is a sauna of my own design.
